The original Wind Phone

The first Wind Phone was created by Itaru Sasaki in 2010 following the death of his cousin. In his garden on a hill near Ōtsuchi, he placed an old phone booth with a disconnected telephone—a private place where he could pick up the receiver and say what he continued to carry within himself.

After the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011, Sasaki opened the garden to other people as well. In the years that followed, thousands came to the phone, and his simple personal idea gradually spread around the world.

Something created for one person became a place for thousands of others.
